Palio della Balestra Gubbio

Palio Della Balestra
31 May

This crossbow competition is first mentioned in a document dating from 1410. The competitors are members of the crossbow clubs in Gubbio and San Sepolcro, where crossbowing has been a popular sport for hundreds of years.
The crossbowmen are dressed in medieval costume and there is also a display of fl ag-waving.
The winner receives a banner made especially for the event each year by a noted artist. After the competition there is a procession through the town's torch-lit streets.
