Madonna di Montallegro The largest town in the Gulf of Tigullio is Rapallo, divided between the charming historic centre of the old fishing village, the art nouveau villas and buildings that mark its glorious past as a well-known resort and its modern buildings which sprung up during the construction craze of the 1960s.

Well worth a visit is the famous Pozzetto beach, one of the most beautiful in the whole area. From the 1 to the 3 July Rapallo celebrates the Feast of the Madonna di Montallegro, commemorating an apparition of the Madonna in 1557. Among the various events held during the feast is a firework display in the bay at midnight on 2 July and the grand finale with the burning of the castle, when hundreds of torches and lights are floated on the sea creating a magic effect in the gulf.
